Mi Gente: We Endorse Soto for YT

Duke community,

We are pleased to announce that Mi Gente, Duke’s Latinx student organization, has decided to endorse Steven Soto for Young Trustee! We, the Mi Gente board, had the opportunity to meet with Steven Soto on Sunday and were very impressed by his platform for Young Trustee.

Through his various involvements, Steven Soto has demonstrated a strong commitment to both understanding and working with undergraduates across various spaces to influence change within the Duke Community.

Through his commitments as BDU president, co-founder of Project ARTS, the undergraduate representative on the Trinity College Board of Visitors, and as a student developer of the Washington Duke Scholars Program, Soto has demonstrated a strong understanding of undergraduate life, and a dedication to serve his community. Soto’s platform, which emphasizes financial aid and college affordability, academic affairs concerning the proposition of a new curriculum, increasing access to undergraduate research, and the promoting of diversity, inclusion, and the arts are aspects that, if accomplished, would be invaluable to our community. Soto understands that Young Trustee is a not an advocacy position, but rather a position of representation and presents a firm argument of his ability to represent the student body. Further, the fact that Soto is the first ever Latinx semi-finalist for Young Trustee makes him the best candidate to represent the voices of Latinx students on campus.

Ultimately, Mi Gente believes that Soto’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity as well as his commitment for access and equity on campus will translate well to his role on the Board of Trustees. We fully support his candidacy and we encourage you to vote for Steven Soto.

**All four candidates were given the chance to present their platforms to our council**

Best,
Mi Gente Council 2016-17
