Real Tired Girl Sh*t

Yeah I’m in my bag but my eyes got bags too. And that’s why every time you see me I look like I only slept an hour or two…

If you find that most days the only thing that gets you out of bed is the excitement about getting back in the bed at the end of the day, then you sis, might be a tired girl. If your body gave up circulating blood and instead circulates caffeine, then sis, you are indeed, a tired girl. If the thought of being asked to do one more thing has you ready to blow a gasket and spontaneously combust, then sis, welcome to the club because you too are a tired girl. But that’s ok because I’m here to help, but before you ask, no I don’t have a coupon code for free coffee, so if you can bare to keep your eyes open for all of 5 minutes then let’s begin.


See tiredness and fatigue come in many forms. For some it’s physical, you probably get the recommended nightly 7-8 hours of sleep,as your total sleep for the week. For others, you may have a foggy mind and edgy demeanor, that can only be the result of being run ragged with to-do lists, obligations, and commitments. But for all my supreme tired queens, you may be both, and well ya know #same. I know you feel invincible and while I want to commend you on always getting it done, I want to tell you to stop taxing yourself. I know, I know, your body can run for a full day on 3 hours of sleep, you pull all-nighters better than anyone you know, and if no one else can get it done you can. But do you really know what you’re doing to yourself? Sleep deprivation is associated with a plethora of symptoms and disorders such as depression, weight gain, and increased risk of developing chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease (WebMD). There are some studies that even suggest that sleep deprivation and chronic sleep loss is associated with an increased risk in developing Alzheimer’s disease (NIH). So if I  haven’t succeeded in scaring you into rest, let me try a softer approach.


I want to let you know that you are not obligated to be available for others 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You are not obligated to put any to do list ahead of your rest and recovery. If God created an entire universe and took a break, you are not obligated to work 40 hour work weeks or be in classes for 8 hours a day, with no rest. You are entitled to guilt free rest, relaxation and recovery. You are allowed to release all things weighing you down physically, emotionally, and psychologically. The fact of the matter is that you'll never be able to stand upright with the weight of the world on your shoulders, and as Erykah Badu said, “you gone hurt yo back, dragging all them bags like that”. Once you release all that unnecessary baggage and those unrealistic expectations, then sis, you can become the revitalized girl I know you can be.
